Volleyball Downs Binghamton 3-1
Nov. 6, 2005
ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team defeated Binghamton by a count of 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gym in Orono. The Black Bears won by scores of 30-24, 23-30, 30-22 and 30-26 to improve to 10-11 overall and 7-3 in America East. It marked the fourth-straight win for Maine after it had dropped three-straight matches in conference. The victory also evened the season series with Binghamton at a win apiece, as the Bearcats' 3-2 victory over Maine last month sent the Black Bears on their brief losing skid. Binghamton fell to 17-11 overall and 9-2 in the league. Senior co-captain Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) led Maine with 20 kills and added five blocks, while freshman Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) totaled 13 kills and a match-high six blocks. Lawson's six blocks versus Binghamton followed a nine-block performance in a win over UMBC Thursday night. Leah Guidinger (Raymore, Saskatchewan) added 14 kills in the win and Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) registered nine kills and six service aces. The first game went back and forth before Maine went on an 8-2 run to snap a 17-17 tie and take a commanding six-point lead. Kills from Guidinger, Lawson and Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) keyed the run as Binghamton never got closer than five points the rest of the game. The second game saw the same events unfold, but this time they went in the favor of the Bearcats. Tied at 16, Binghamton went on a 10-3 run, capped by a Brianna Strong kill, to go up 26-19. BU never looked back in taking game two.
Game three saw the Black Bears race out to a 10-1 lead and never let the advantage dip below six points the rest of the way. Jordan had four kills and three blocks in the game to help give Maine a 2-1 lead in the match.
The final game was close. Five-straight points by Binghamton tied the game late at 21-21. However, Maine answered by scoring the next five points to go up 26-21. The Bearcats got within two at 28-26, but the Black Bears scored the final-two points of the game to win it and the match. Maine returns to the road Friday when it faces Albany at 7 p.m. The Black Bears will then return home next Sunday for the season finale when they play host to Stony Brook at 1 p.m. in Memorial Gym. |
