Women's Volleyball Falls to UMBC, 3-1

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine women's volleyball team came out strong with a dominating first game win, but the Black Bears then went on to drop three straight games to give them the 3-1 loss against UMBC on Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium. With the loss the Black Bears fall to 6-19, 4-7 in America East while the Retriviers record evens out at 14-14, 6-5.

Rookie Amanda Armstrong (Waukesha, Wis.) lead the team with six kills in the first game, carrying the Black Bears to a 30-18 victory. The Black Bears played well in the first half of the second game, but with the score tied at eight the Retriviers made a run for it. The final of the second game was 30-23 in favor of UMBC. In the third game, the Black Bears could not compete with UMBC's Sarah Fillmore, whose seven kills gave the Retriviers the 30-15 win. In the final stanza, the Black Bears and the Retriviers battled point for point. There were six lead changes and the score was tied a total of 10 times throughout the game. The Retriviers finished with a 33-31 extra point victory to give them the match.

Armstrong as well as Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario) and Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) tallied 10 kills apiece for the match. Setter Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) registered 43 sets in the match for the Black Bears. Senior Jody Connacher (Spokane,Wash.) recorded 19 digs on the match.

The Black Bears finish up the 2006 season on Sunday, Nov. 12 when they host Binghamton. Game time at Memorial Gymnasium is 1 p.m. Immediately following the match, seniors Jody Connacher, Shelly Seipp and Justin Cabot will be honored for Senior Day.
