Volleyball Rallies to Upend Albany

ORONO, Maine - Behind four double-doubles, the University of Maine volleyball team rallied to defeat Albany, 3-2 (15-30, 33-31, 24-30, 30-25, 15-12), Friday evening in an America East match at Memorial Gym. With the loss, Albany (24-6, 12-1) snaps an 18 match winning streak and loses for the first time this season in league play. The Black Bears improve to 17-10 and 9-4 in conference matches.

The Great Danes hit .306 compared to .053 for Maine, to take game one. The Black Bears recovered, hitting .321 as a team in game two and .362 in game four.

Junior Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) led Maine with 19 kills and also added 12 digs, while senior Carmen Morgan (Watson, Saskatchewan) posted 14 kills and 14 digs. Junior Leah Guidinger (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) tallied 13 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) led the team with 55 assists, plus recorded 11 digs.

With four blocks, junior Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) needs only three blocks to eclipse the program's single-season record of 96. Fotter also had 16 kills and senior Brittany Howe (Columbia, Maine) added 13 kills and seven digs. - Albany was led by Shelby Goldman (22 kills) and Ashlee Reed (19 kills). Blair Buchanan had a match-high 62 kills. Entering the contest, the team had not lost since Sept. 18.

The Black Bears have already clinched a spot in the conference championship, scheduled for Nov. 19-20 in Albany, N.Y. The squad earned the No. 3 seed and will face No. 2 Northeastern in the semifinals. Top-seeded Albany will play No. 4 Binghamton in the other match.

 

 

Maine concludes its 2004 regular season on Saturday, hosting Binghamton at 4 p.m. Prior to the game, the three seniors on the Black Bears roster - Howe, Morgan and Marina Ivankovic (Stoney Creek, Ontario) - will be honored for their career achievements.
