Volleyball Tops Binghamton in Regular Season Finale

ORONO, Maine - Junior Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) recorded a match-high 19 kills to lead the University of Maine volleyball to team to a 3-2 (30-24, 30-16, 24-30, 30-32, 15-10) America East victory over Binghamton, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gym. The match was the regular season finale for both squads.

With the win, Maine improves to 18-10 overall and 10-4 in conference play, while the Bearcats drop to 17-16 and 7-7. The Black Bears have won four consecutive matches, all in league action.

Fotter also tallied six blocks to become Maine all-time single-season leader with 99. Sophomore Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) notched a match-high 62 assists and had 16 digs for the double-double.

The Black Bears took command in game two, hitting .325 compared to -.025 for Binghamton. In the decisive fifth game, Maine hit .350 as a squad while the visitors only hit .150.

Junior Leah Guidinger (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) led Maine with 18 digs, plus had 12 kills. Junior Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) totaled 12 kills and 11 digs. A pair of seniors playing in their last home contest - Carmen Morgan (Watson, Saskatchwan) and Brittany Howe (Columbia, Maine) - combined for 24 kills and 19 digs.

Binghamton was paced by Jen Smith, who had 15 kills and 16 digs. Michele Heck added 16 kills and Ashley Meffert posted 44 assists.

The 18 victories for Maine are the most in the program's modern history (since 1999).

Maine will return to the court on Nov. 19 as the No. 3 seed at the conference championship in Albany. The Black Bears will face No. 2 Northeastern. Top-seeded Albany and No. 4 Binghamton will play in the other semifinal match.
