ORONO, Maine - University of Maine volleyball head coach Lynn Atherley on Wednesday announced her team's schedule for the 2006 season. Six America East home matches and numerous early-season tournaments highlight the schedule, which will begin Aug. 25-26 at the Cincinnati Tournament in Ohio.

Maine will kick off the Cincinnati Tournament on Aug. 25 when the Black Bears face Tennessee Tech and Western Michigan in back-to-back matches. Maine will conclude play in the tournament the following afternoon when it takes on host-school Cincinnati.

The Black Bears will return to tournament action during the following weekends as they take part in the Temple Tournament in Philadelphia, Pa. (Sept. 1-2), the Fordham Tournament in Bronx, N.Y. (Sept. 15-16) and the Harvard Tournament in Boston, Mass. (Sept. 23). Maine will face schools from major conferences during the tournaments, including the Big East (Rutgers), Big 12 (Kansas) and Atlantic 10 (Temple and Fordham). The Black Bears will face Dartmouth and Harvard in the Harvard Tournament.

After a match at Northeastern on Sept. 24, Maine enters conference action and the home portion of its schedule when the Black Bears play host to New Hampshire on Friday, Sept. 29, Hartford on Sunday, Oct. 1, in Memorial Gym. Maine will hit the road for its next two matches as it will take on UMBC (Friday, Oct. 6) and Stony Brook (Sunday, Oct. 8).

The Black Bears will return home for a match with Albany on Friday, Oct. 13, before heading back out on the road for a pair of matches against defending league champion Binghamton (Friday, Oct. 20) and Long Island (Saturday, Oct. 21). A home match versus Stony Brook on Friday, Oct. 27, and a match at Hartford (Sunday, Oct. 29) rounds out the October portion of the Black Bears' schedule.

The final month of the regular season features a pair of road and home matches for Maine. Maine travels to Albany to face the Great Danes on Friday, Nov. 3, and then take on New Hampshire in Durham on Sunday, Nov. 5. The Black Bears close out the regular season with two home matches on the final weekend. They will face UMBC on Friday, Nov. 10, and then meet Binghamton on Sunday, Nov. 12.

Maine returns 10 letterwinners from the 2005 season, which saw the Black Bears win 10 of their final 15 matches and qualify for the America East Tournament for the second-consecutive season. Seniors Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) and Justine Chabot (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) will serve as the captains for the 2006 squad. Admission is free to all home matches held at Memorial Gym.
