Volleyball Recognized by AVCA for Team Academic Excellence

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team was one of just 70 NCAA Division I programs to receive the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2007-08 season. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the association. The Black Bears were the only America East team to earn the prestigious honor. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, or a 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale. Overall, 353 teams (throughout all levels of college and high school) were given an academic award, which set a new AVCA record.
Ten (10) Black Bear volleyball players were honored last fall as they were named to the 2007 America East Academic Honor Roll for earning GPAs of 3.0 or better. The list of 10 included Paige Tortorello, Amanda Armstrong, Lindsay Allman, Brittany Kiehl, Jessica Wolfenden, Jennifer Domer, Ashlee Wright, Emily Root, Katrina Fruehauf and Amy Lawson. Seven of those members (Kiehl, Wolfenden, Domer, Wright, Root, Fruehauf and Lawson) were named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
