Maine Volleyball Team to Participate in Dig Pink Challenge for Breast Cancer
Oct. 2, 2008 Coach Lynn Atherley and the Maine volleyball team today announced that the Black Bears will participate in this year's Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally. Maine will host the University of New Hampshire on Fri., Oct. 24 at 5pm in a designated Dig Pink game. The game, to be held in the Memorial Gym, will precede the Black Bear hockey home opener versus Northeastern later that evening. "Our team is really excited and extremely proud to take part in our first Dig Pink game to raise awareness of and funds for Breast Cancer," said senior setter Jessica Wolfenden. "We are very excited for the game and hoping the campus and community will support our fight to find a cure and help make this event a huge success." "I'm impressed that our volleyball team has taken the initiative to get involved with such a worthy cause," said Justin Swanson, assistant director of athletic marketing. "This is another great example of Maine student-athletes playing an active role in the community to help others." Those attending the Oct. 24 Dig Pink match-up will also be able to contribute at the game through free-will donation or by purchasing Dig Pink volleyball cut-outs, which will be displayed on the wall of the Pit during the game. Dig Pink is a national breast cancer awareness rally sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation. Dig Pink games will feature high school and college matches across the country. The purpose of the event is to promote breast cancer education by encouraging players and fans to wear pink, distributing education materials, and collecting donations. The emphasis of Dig Pink is to raise community awareness of breast cancer and what individuals can do to eradicate the disease.
