Laura Goettsch Named America East Volleyball Player of the Week

Oct. 30, 2006

ORONO, Maine - Sophomore hitter Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario) was named the America East Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday for her performance in a pair of victories this weekend for the University of Maine. The award is the first conference honor for the Black Bears this season.

Goettsch recorded team-highs in kills in both matches, including career and match highs of 17 kills in a 3-1 victory over Stony Brook on Friday night. Goettsch followed with a team-high tying 15 kills in Sunday's 3-1 win at Hartford, giving Maine a sweep in the season series over the Hawks. She averaged 4.0 kills per game and 4.56 points per contest on the weekend, while also posting a hitting percentage of .306.

The pair of victories raised Maine's overall record to 6-16, but more importantly evened the Black Bears' conference record at 4-4. Maine stands in fifth place in the league and is just a half-game out of the final America East playoff spot.

The Black Bears return to action this weekend with a pair of road matches. Maine will take on Albany on Friday at 7 p.m., and then travel to face New Hampshire on Sunday at 1 p.m.
