Amy Lawson Named America East Rookie of the Week in Volleyball
Nov. 8, 2005 ORONO, Maine - Freshman middle blocker Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Tuesday for her performances in a pair of wins this past weekend versus UMBC and Binghamton. In both matches, Lawson averaged 3.0 kills, 4.12 points and 1.88 blocks per game and hit a solid .296. Overall, she totaled 24 kills and 15 blocks. Lawson posted 11 kills and a career-high nine blocks in a 3-1 win over UMBC on Thursday, and followed that with a 13-kill, six-block performance against Binghamton. The wins helped Maine clinch a spot in the America East playoffs on Nov. 18-19, at a site to be determined. For the season, Lawson leads the team with 50 blocks and is second on the squad in hitting percentage at .242. The rookie award marks the second time this season a Black Bear has garnered the honor. Classmate Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) earned the award on Sept. 18.
Maine returns to action Friday when it travels to face Albany at 7 p.m. The Black Bears then return home to Memorial Gym on Sunday for the 2005 season finale, when they play host to Stony Brook at 1 p.m.
