Shelly Seipp Named an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Selection
Nov. 9, 2006 ORONO, Maine - University of Maine volleyball senior co-captain Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) has been named a 2006 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. She was named to the second-team in District I of the University Division. Seipp, a kinesiology and physical education major, garners the award after compiling a 3.89 GPA. Seipp was one of just three players from America East to be named an academic all-district selction, as District I covers schools throughout the New England area and mid-Atlantic region. The prestigious academic award is the third of her career, as Seipp was also named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll in 2003 and 2005. She leads the team and is among the top 10 in America East in assists with 881. Seipp needs just 19 more assists to top 900 for the season and would do so all four seasons of her career. A 2005 First-Team All-America East selection, Seipp is coming off a 58-assist performance on Sunday at New Hampshire. She also ranks among the league leaders in service aces with 46 (0.53 a game).
Seipp leads the Black Bears into the final weekend of regular season action with a pair of home matches on Friday and Sunday at Memorial Gym. Maine remains alive for a spot in the America East Tournament, which will be held next weekend at the University of Albany. An appearance for Maine would extend its school-record streak to three-straight trips to the conference playoffs. The quest to return to the playoffs begins on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., when the Black Bears play host to UMBC. Maine will conclude its regular season on Sunday when it plays host to defending conference champion Binghamton at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all home volleyball matches played at Memorial Gym.
