Volleyball's Laura Goettsch Named America East's Player of the Week

Nov. 10, 2008

Orono, Maine - University of Maine volleyball senior outside hitter Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario) was named the America East Player of the Week on Monday. Goettsch led the Black Bears (13-12, 6-5 AE) to two conference road wins over Hartford and Stony Brook to clinch their first America East playoff berth since the 2005 season.

In Maine's win over Hartford in three sets on Friday, Goettsch had a team-high 10 kills, six digs and a block while hitting with a .600 attack percentage. On Sunday the Black Bears also downed Stony Brook in three sets. In that match, Goettsch had 13 kills and a team-high 11 digs. For the weekend she tallied 23 kills, 17 digs and two blocks with a .400 hitting percentage in only six sets. Goettsch is currently second on Maine with 221 kills, averaging 2.33 per set.

Maine has qualified for the America East tournament and can finish as high as third place if they defeat Binghamton in the regular-season finale on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Gym. If the Black Bears win, UMBC needs to lose one of their two remaining conference matches because the Retrievers hold a percentage based tie-breaker over Maine. The playoffs begin on Friday, Nov. 21, with the Black Bears facing off against either Albany or Binghamton.
