Volleyball Garners Several Awards at America East Banquet Thursday
Nov. 17, 2005 ALBANY, N.Y. - Three University of Maine volleyball players were named to the 2005 All-America East First-Team at the conference's awards banquet Thursday night at the University of Albany. Seniors Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) and Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan), and junior Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) were named to the league's first-team, while freshmen Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) and Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) were selected to the All-Rookie team. Fotter and Jordan garnered the first-team honors for the second-consecutive season, while the Seipp's honor was the first of her career. Fotter, who leads the team in hitting percentage (.299) and kills (283), also ranks fifth and eighth, respectively, in those rankings throughout the league. Jordan ranks 10th in the conference in points per game at 3.51. Seipp ranks second in the league in assists (944) and service aces per game (0.57). Lawson was named to the All-Rookie team after placing third in the league in blocks per game (0.97). She totaled 69 on the season. Allman ranked second on the team in digs (265) and fewest reception errors per game (0.38). Senior co-captain Leah Guidinger (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) was also honored on the night as she earned All-America East Honorable Mention recognition.
The awards banquet comes the night before the semifinals of the America East Tournament. The Black Bears, who earned the No. 3-seed in the tournament, will face second-seeded Binghamton at 8 p.m., at Alumni Gymnasium. The winner of that match will face the winner of No. 1-Albany and No. 4-Stony Brook. Those two teams will face each other at 5:30 p.m. to open tournament play.
