Maine Set to Compete at America East Volleyball Championship

Nov. 18, 2004

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball has earned the No. 3 seed in the 2004 America East Championship, Nov. 19-20 at the Recreation and Convocation Center in Albany, N.Y. The Black Bears (18-10, 10-4 America East) will play second-seeded Northeastern (20-10, 11-3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. No. 1 Albany will face No. 4 Binghamton in the other semifinal contest at 5 p.m. The single elimination tournament concludes with the title match at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Maine will be participating at the event for the second time (the squad played in the 2001 event) and will be seeking their first tournament crown.

After a 14-20 overall mark and a 5-9 conference campaign in 2003, the Black Bears have rebounded this season under first-year head coach Lynn Theehs, winning 18 matches, the most victories since the volleyball program was reinstated in 1999.

The team has won its last five matches, including a 3-1 decision at Northeastern on Nov. 6. Junior Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) paced the Black Bears in the contest in Boston, finishing with 22 kills and 20 digs. Sophomore Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) had 4 assists and 30 digs.

On Oct. 22 in Orono, the Huskies came out on top with a 3-0 victory. Maine was led by senior Brittany Howe (Columbia, Maine) with 10 kills.
