Four Black Bears Named to All-Conference Volleyball Team
Nov. 18, 2004 ALBANY, N.Y. - When the America East announced its all-conference volleyball team at its annual awards banquet on Thursday evening, the University of Maine was well represented. Four Black Bears - seniors Carmen Morgan and Brittany Howe and juniors Shannan Fotter and Kaili Jordan - garnered spots on the team, tying Albany for the most from one squad. Howe (Columbia, Maine) was an America East Honorable Mention a year ago. The middle blocker is fifth in the league in hitting percentage (.313) and is averaging 2.71 kills per game. In Maine's 3-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Oct. 29, Howe established a school single-match record with a .786 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Morgan (Watson, Saskatchewan) ranks fourth in the conference in blocks per game, with a 0.92 average. From the right side hitter position, she is also registering 2.57 kills per game. She earns a spot on the all-conference team for the second time as she was a selection in 2002. Additionally, Morgan was an honorable mention in 2001. With a .346 hitting percentage, Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) is second among America East leaders. The middle blocker has 99 total blocks this year, setting a program single-season record. Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) is a middle blocker who ranks sixth in the conference in kills per game with 3.65. She also is averaging 2.56 digs per game. The four Maine (18-10, 10-6 conference) players named to the all-conference squad were the most in school history. The 18 victories are the most since volleyball was reinstated at Maine prior to the 1999 season. Maine, which has won its last four contests, will continue its season this weekend at the conference championship in Albany, N.Y. The third-seeded Black Bears will play No. 2 Northeastern on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Top-seeded Albany and No. 4 Binghamton will play in the other semifinal. The semifinal winners will meet on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. in the title match.
