Volleyball Announces Incoming Recruiting Class
Nov. 28, 2006 ORONO, Maine - University of Maine volleyball coach Lynn Atherley announced on Tuesday that Emily Root (Barrington Hills, Ill.), Megan Smith (Dayton, Ohio) and Paige Tortorello (Mundelein, Ill.) have signed national letters of intent to attend the University beginning in the fall of 2007. Root, a 5-9 setter from Barrington H.S., led her team to a fourth-place finish in the state playoffs this past season. She competes on the Sky High Volleyball Club, which is one of the premier club teams in the country that has earned numerous high finishes at several national tournaments. Smith, a 6-0 outside hitter from Bellbrook H.S., led her team to the Southwestern Buckeye League championship in 2006 and was named the league's MVP. She was also named to the All-District 15 First-Team, and competes for the Dayton Junior Volleyball Club, which competed in the 2005 USA Junior Olympic Volleyball Championship. Tortorello, a 5-9 setter from Mundelein H.S., served as a captain during her senior season. She earned several individual awards during her career, including being named an All-Area setter (2004-05) by the News Sun Press, an All-Conference setter (2004-05), and an All-Suburban Conference First-Team setter (2004-05). Tortorello also competes on the Sports Performance Volleyball Club team which is rated as one of the best volleyball club teams in the nation.
The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse. The early signing period began November 8.
