Men's and Women's Cross Country Open 2007 Season Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's cross country teams opened their seasons on Saturday at the Massachusetts Invite in Amherst, Mass. The women's team enjoyed a tremendous day as they won the three-team event with a score of 35. The men finished a solid second in their five-team meet with 63 points.

On the women's side, Black Bear runner Jessica Belliveau won the individual title in a time of 17:39. Belliveau was one of five Maine runners who finished in the top 12 of the individual standings. Elonnai Hickok placed third with a time of 18:07, while Jolene Belanger took eighth place with a mark of 19:11. Laura Brustolon and Sabrina Petri finished 11th and 12th, respectively Brustolon had a time of 19:21, while Petri had a 19:24 mark.

Massachusetts placed second on the women's side with 40 points, while Vermont finished third with 49 points.

David Englehutt was the men's highest finisher for Maine as he placed sixth with a time of 25:14. Miles Bartlett was Maine's other top-10 finisher with an eight-place effort in a time of 25:29. Charles Therriault was 12th in a time of 25:44, while Chris Harmon was 19th in 26:01. Brendan Carr produced the Black Bears' fifth fastest time with a mark of 26:08, which was good enough for 23rd place.

UMass won the men's event with a total of 33 points. Following Maine's second-place performance was Connecticut with 77 points. Colgate (89 points) and Vermont (101 points) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
