Maine Cross Country Competes At New England Championships

OSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's cross country teams took part in the 2006 New England Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park in Boston. The Maine men were ninth overall, while the women finished seventeenth. Kirby Davis was fourth overall and Jessica Belliveau was 24th as the top finishers for the Black Bears. Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was fourth overall in 24:50 in the men's eight kilometer race. Joshua Trevino (Rochester, N.H.) was eighth overall with a time of 25:03. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) finished in 25:35, while Jon McGonagle (Portland, Maine) finished in 25:57. David Englehutt (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) rounded out the top five scorers in 26:11. In the women's race, freshman Jessica Belliveau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) was 24th overall with a time of 18:21 on the five kilometer course. Belliveau has been the top finisher for Maine in every meet this season. Fellow freshman Elonnai Hickok (Rutledge, Pa.) finished in 18:54 and Shelby Howe (Columbia, Maine) finished in 19:26. Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) and Teig Choroszy (Saco, Maine) finished in 19:50 and 19:51 respectively, to round out the top five scorers for the Black Bears. After a three-week break, the Black Bears will host the America East Championships on Saturday, October 28. Both races will begin on the practice fields and finish at Alfond Stadium.
