Maine To Host America East Cross Country Championships

Oct. 26, 2006

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine will host the 2006 America East Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 28. The men's race will begin at 11:00 am, while the women's race will start at noon. Both races will start on the practice fields and finish on the Beckett Family Track at Alfond Stadium.

The Maine men's team will be led by senior Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine), who became the first Black Bear to win the conference individual title in 2005. He was named America East cross country performer of the week three times this season. Maine will also look for strong finishes by Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) and Joshua Trevino (Rochester, N.H.). The men's team won the conference championship in 2004. Maine has also finished second four times.

The Black Bear women will be led by freshman Jessica Belliveau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick), who has been the top Maine finisher in each meet this season. She has also earned America East cross country performer of the week honors twice. The Black Bears will also look for freshman Elonnai Hickok (Rutledge, Pa.) and junior Shelby Howe (Columbia, Maine) to have strong performances. The highest finish for the women's team was in 1989 when they took second place. Maine has also finished third twice. The Black Bears have not had an individual win the championship in conference history.

This marks the fourth time the conference championship has been held at Maine and the first since 2001. For more information on Maine Athletics, please visit www.GoBlackBears.com.
